Henderson County Art Show Features Diverse Styles, Subjects

The Art League of Henderson County’s (ALHC’s) Fall Member Art Show is on display through Thursday, January 5, at the Opportunity House in Hendersonville. The judged exhibit, which has been an annual tradition for more than 20 years, represents a range of styles including realistic, impressionistic and abstract work. Awards are given in the categories of abstract, landscape, people/animals and still life/floral.

This year’s judge is watercolorist Pamela Haddock, whose recent accomplishments include winning the Watercolor Society of North Carolina’s Winsor Newton and Western Region awards, the Southern Watercolor Society’s Winsor Newton Award and the Virginia Watercolor Society Award. “The Hendersonville artists have enviable skill,” says Haddock. “I most enjoy the work of an artist who is in love with their subject and has a good handle on their medium.”

The show features a variety of subject matter as well as media, including oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, colored pencil and mixed media. “Viewers will certainly appreciate the diversity of the exhibit,” says Sharon Eng, publicity co-chair for ALHC. “There’s something for every taste, and most of the works are for sale at very attractive prices.”

ALHC is composed of artists of many skill sets, from emerging to professional, as well as those who wish to support the arts in their community. The organization allows for exchange of ideas, opportunities and resources and is open to all who are interested in fine art, both practitioners and patrons. ALHC meets monthly January through November on the second Sunday (third Sunday in May) at The Opportunity House. A social time begins at 1:30 p.m. followed by a short business meeting beginning at 2 p.m., and a presentation lasting until 4 p.m.

“We usually have a guest speaker at our meetings to share information about techniques, materials and opportunities,” says Eng. “We welcome every artist, and are proud to support our emerging artists by providing monetary funds for local teachers, loaning works to local schools, sponsoring awards for students and engaging in community outreach, exhibitions and workshops.”

The Opportunity House is located at 1411 Asheville Highway, Hendersonville. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 P.M., Monday through Friday. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Learn more at opportunityhouse.org or by calling 770.362.9045.
