The Laurel of Asheville is a lifestyle magazine focused on the arts, culture, and communities of Western North Carolina, and submitted events should fall within this context. If your event occurs over several days, please submit multiple events. Events extending beyond a month will not be accepted. All submissions are subject to editorial approval and edits for clarity and style before being published online. If you are going to include a photograph, please be certain that you have the rights to utilize that image. If there is a question about image rights, we may remove the image. Also, images should be no larger than 2000 pixels wide. Large images will prevent the event from being submitted. Please allow up to 5 days for your even to be posted. GETTING TO KNOW OIL PAINTS with Susan Sinyai
There is so much to think about when you begin an oil painting, it’s not hard to lose your way and end up with a muddy, flat mess!
The goal of this workshop is to guide you toward success, and to end with a painting that makes you feel happy and satisfied! This introduction to oils is perfect to get you started and for those who have been away from oils for a while – beginners or experienced artists are ALL welcome!
Students will begin with the basics, using fruit as our subject, and there will be step by step demonstrations along the way as each concept is explained. The painting will be developed using modern intuitive techniques, while still bringing in some of the classical methods. Students will learn…
– How to build layers, and what medium to use, and when.
– Colors – understanding them, and how to work with a limited palette to create a more cohesive painting. How using colors properly help to create a sense of depth a sense of mood.
– Brushes – what brushes to use, how to hold them properly and use them to create different strokes and textures.
– What is glazing, how and when is that done? How about scumbling? Get a better understanding of the terminology!
Feeling comfortable and successful with oils ( as with any medium) is a process, so this workshop will benefit not only beginners but also established artists wanting to get back in touch with the basics.
