Margaret Curtis: Mental Notes

November 18 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
Event Series (See All)
Free

The works included in this exhibition span over a decade and focus on themes of climate change, societal decay, and apocalyptic dread. With distinct wit and craftsmanship, Curtis addresses these universal threats from a deeply personal perspective.

The work, Spot Fire and Flash Flood, is informed by the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon wildfire of 2022, which significantly altered the landscape near her second home of Las Vegas, New Mexico. Additionally, three works from her series Burning Bridges addresses related themes of destruction by fire and flood following the impact of Hurricane Helene on Western North Carolina.

Also included are a series of monoprints entitled Earth Ear, in these images, Curtis invites us to consider whether an earth-based intelligence or consciousness exists. Rounding out the exhibition are several works from her Auriferous, Emotional Cartographies and Weapons of War series, which explore journalistic sensationalism, political division and our Nation’s culture of violence. Lastly, several of Curtis’ sketchbooks will be on display.
