The Laurel of Asheville is a lifestyle magazine focused on the arts, culture, and communities of Western North Carolina, and submitted events should fall within this context. If your event occurs over several days, please submit multiple events. Events extending beyond a month will not be accepted. All submissions are subject to editorial approval and edits for clarity and style before being published online. If you are going to include a photograph, please be certain that you have the rights to utilize that image. If there is a question about image rights, we may remove the image. Also, images should be no larger than 2000 pixels wide. Large images will prevent the event from being submitted. Please allow up to 5 days for your even to be posted. Join us for an evening with Nellie McKay! Sunday, May 12, doors at 6 p.m. and show at 7 p.m. $18 adv/$20 day of show.
Since Get Away from Me, Nellie’s debut record, she has released a bunch of well-received albums with as many different sounds, ranging from pop to jazz to rock & folk, always defying categorization.
Her music has been used on radio, TV, and in the movies, and she has appeared on many shows, from Letterman to A Prairie Home Companion, as well as writing & performing acclaimed bios of Barbara Graham, Rachel Carson, Billy Tipton, and Joan Rivers.
A nominee for The Ovation award for Ethan Coen’s A Play is a Poem, Nellie won a Theatre World award for her work on Broadway in The Threepenny Opera, & Drama Desk award for off-Broadway’s Old Hats.
She has written and activated for humans, animals, and the environment since childhood, and continues to push for peace & justice for all.
