Concurrent Exhibits at Blue Spiral 1 in June

Artist, Dana Brown

Visitors to Blue Spiral 1 in downtown gallery this month will be treated to three exhibitions that run through Friday, June 24.

On the gallery’s street level, there is a four-person show featuring figurative cast glass pieces by Dean Allison, dramatic wood sculptures by Morgan Herrin, several enigmatic oil paintings by Charles Ladson, and Mike Smith’s poignant photography.

The lower level gallery features recent works by several prominent regional artists. These include ceramic vessels and wall installations by Josh Copus, David Eichelberger, Donald Penny, and Michael Poness. These ceramic pieces are complemented by Mitchell Lonas’ always intriguing incised aluminum panels, oil paintings by Daniel Robbins, and Suzanne Stryk’s mixed-media works. Sculptural wood bowls by Brad Sells help complete this diverse collection that reflects the influences of nature and architecture.

In the gallery’s Small Format Room are encaustic paintings by Dana Brown. Dana’s paintings evidence her mastery of an oftentimes challenging medium, as she carves and scrapes layers of the pigmented wax to create complex images of old factories, trains, boats, and details of machinery.

In addition, four new exhibitions will open Thursday, June 30, with a reception from 5–8 p.m. The reception and all exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Blue Spiral 1, 38 Biltmore Avenue, is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The gallery will also be open for the Downtown Asheville Art District’s First Friday from 5–8 p.m. on Friday, July 1. For further information, visit bluespiral1.com or call 828.251.0202.
