Festivals Abound in the Historic Town of Dillsboro

A tourist mecca since 1866 when visitors first began arriving by train to enjoy the cool mountain air, Dillsboro has changed very little over the years. It remains a picturesque country village with charming shops, galleries, restaurants, and country inns. The town, located less than an hour southwest of Asheville, is also known for its popular festivals.

Dillsboro is hosting three art festivals between now and this fall. First up is the Front Street Arts & Crafts Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 18. This will be followed by the Summer Arts & Crafts Market on August 20 and ColorFest, a fine arts and crafts show, on October 1.

The Front Street Arts & Crafts Show will feature more than 50 booths filled with works created by some of the region’s most talented artisans. In addition, there will be great festival food and entertainment for the entire family. And there will be a silent auction to benefit the Sylva Garden Club Scholarship Fund.

Doreyl Ammons Cain, one of the original organizers and a continuing participant, says the festival is special because the artists are treated like VIPs, rather than just a source of income for the town. “The Front Street festival and ColorFest are more like regular juried fine arts festivals now,” adding that the art is “extremely well done and (the festivals) are a great way to spend time with each artist!”

While in town, be sure to check out Doreyl’s 16-footlong mural “On Hallowed Ground,” which is located in the small park at the southern entrance to the town.
