Asheville Gallery of Art is currently featuring works by Joyce Schlapkohl in an exhibit titled Colors of Summer, with paintings of flowers, the Carolina landscape, still life, and African animals. It opens with a reception from 5–8 p.m. on Friday, July 1, and runs through July 31.
Joyce describes her style as “painterly realism, with an emphasis on the focal point using light and shadow, and their interaction on a variety of subjects.”
Now known for her work in oil, Joyce started as a watercolor artist and even taught in that medium. It was moving to North Carolina in 1999 that changed the way she worked.
“The landscape seemed to call for the texture of oil,” she explains. “I found such freedom with oils and I love the buttery feel of applying each stroke.” She continues, “My paintings are to be uplifting and a pleasure for the viewer to enjoy.”
Asheville Gallery of Art is located at 82 Patton Avenue across from Pritchard Park in downtown Asheville. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 1–4 p.m. on Sunday.
