Open Studio Sessions at The Red House Studios & Gallery
Home of the Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League, The Red House Studios & Gallery—310 West State in Black Mountain—invites members of the public to wander through the gallery and explore the dozen artists’ studios. They’re encouraged to view what’s on display for the current exhibit and linger at interest points throughout the house, perhaps chatting with an artist or two.
When the “Open Studio” sign is hanging on the closed door of Studio Ten upstairs, however, no entry is permitted. This sign indicates that a special session is taking place. This reserved time and space provides artists of all skill levels with a portrait drawing/painting session and life drawing session, each taking place weekly for three hours. The friendly and supportive atmosphere encourages creative impulses, while continually renewing the urge of the artist to practice, practice, practice.
Portrait sessions take place on Mondays from 1–4 p.m., and figure drawing is on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A small fee of $10 for each session covers expenses for the live professional models and space. Participants are asked to bring their supplies, such as drawing pencils, charcoal, conté crayons, or paint. Easels and chairs are available, but participants should bring drawing paper or canvas (either canvas board or stretched canvas works best). Each session is limited to 11 participants. If you’re interested, email Fran at greenbergfrances@yahoo.com.
Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1–4 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, visit svfalarts.org.
