Seeing the Unseen: Infrared Photography Exhibit at Green Sage Café South
By Teryn Worsham

Artist, Susanna Euston
Through September, Green Sage Café South will host an exhibit of works by local photographers Susanna Euston, Matthew Kraus, and Chris and Bonnie Allen. Beyond the Visible: Infrared Photography of Nature features everything from wide-angle landscapes to more intimate views of nature. The photos were taken with special digital camera filters adapted to capture infrared light, which is invisible to the naked eye. The resulting black-and-white and toned photos offer a remarkable new view of the world, allowing us to see light beyond the visible spectrum.
“The show is the result of our individual and group passion for infrared images and a desire to share this unique genre,” says Susanna.
“We get together in monthly sessions to provide feedback on recent work. We also go out to shoot together, so you may see images from the same area, but each with a different point of view or style.”
Based in Arden, Susanna (susannaeustonphotography.com) has been a photographer for more than 35 years and focuses on abstract interpretations of nature. She is drawn to infrared photography because, she says, it allows her to “represent the energy and light of nature in ways not normally seen or imagined.”

Artist, Chris Allen
Husband-and-wife Chris and Bonnie live in Weaverville. Bonnie (bonnieallenphoto.com) has studied art in its various forms for most of her life, but first discovered the allure of photography about seven years ago when Chris bought her a camera to use on their hikes. For Chris, (chrisallenimages.com) nature photography is a way to convey what he sees as “the beauty, mystery, and sense of wonder” of the natural world.
Matthew (mkraus.zenfolio.com), lives in Black Mountain, and has been photographing nature for several decades. He sees the world in black and white and views infrared photography as “a more natural way of seeing.” He loves how it displays the ethereal qualities of nature.
