Gershwin Concert Benefits Appalachian Barn Alliance August 7
If you enjoy musical whimsy and allusion, you won’t want to miss “Gershwin With A Twist” in Mars Hill Sunday, August 7, at 3 p.m. Benefiting the Appalachian Barn Alliance (ABA), the performance honors the music of George and Ira Gershwin and stars pianist and vocalist Brian Gurl together with vocalist Michele James-Pruyn.
“This is a performance of Gershwin hits that takes Gershwin ‘back to the future’ into the world of doo-wop, reggae, R&B, rock ‘n roll—and yes, even rap—with some fabulously creative and humorous arrangements,” says Sandy Stevenson, executive director of ABA. “The contradictions, poignancy, and finesse will delight you.”
Based in Madison County, ABA is made up of passionate people who know and revere our region’s barns and farmsteads. With the goal to identify and document historically significant and at-risk barns, the organization envisions a greater regional geographic scope for its future work, ultimately documenting barns and farmsteads in neighboring counties. Memberships are $20 per individual and $30 per family.
From an elegant “Embraceable You” to a driving “Summertime,” and from Gershwin meets Elvis to a powerful version of “Rhapsody in Blue,” “Gershwin With A Twist” is an exhilarating musical journey. The concert will be held at Ebbs Chapel Performing Arts Center, located at 271 Laurel Valley Road, just off Exit 3 on I-26.
Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Reserve yours and learn more at appalachianbarns.org or by calling 828.230.6982 or emailing info@appalachianbarns.org.
