Black Mountain’s Sourwood Festival

Sourwood Festival is August 13-14 in Black Mountain

By Teryn Worsham

Looking for summer fun the whole family can enjoy? Head to downtown Black Mountain for the 39th annual Sourwood Festival. On Saturday and Sunday, August 13–14, the streets will be filled with activities for all ages.

Hosted by the Black Mountain-Swannanoa Chamber of Commerce and drawing more than 30,000 attendees, this free festival features more than 200 arts and crafts vendors, along with music, dancing, food, children’s rides and games, and face painting. Don’t miss the honey and bee demonstrations.

The festivities actually begin on Friday, August 12, from 7–10 p.m. with the Sourwood Idol Contest—an amateur singing competition. Think you have what it takes to be the next Sourwood Idol? This contest is free to enter and offers cash prizes of $200 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place.

There will be plenty of delicious food, too, as vendors will offer summer favorites including BBQ, sausage, corn on the cob, vegetarian options, custom-crafted ice cream, funnel cakes, jellies, and, of course, sourwood honey.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. It’s a no-alcohol event, making it a great place to bring the kids. For more information and to register for the Sourwood Idol Contest, visit the festival website at sourwoodfestival.com.
