WNC Crafts: Jewelry Artists Reardon and Doyle Detail Process of Creating Custom Pieces

Tom Reardon and Kathleen Doyle, artists

Thomas Reardon and Kathleen Doyle Jewelry, located in Grovewood Village, works with clients to create custom jewelry designed to capture individual stories and styles. “From the first sketch to the final polish, we guide you through a collaborative and personal journey,” says Tom Reardon, owner, with Kathleen Doyle, of the studio.

The process begins with a conversation in the working studio. “This is where you share your ideas, inspirations and budget,” says Reardon. “Many of our commissions start by designing around your existing gemstones or by modifying one of our signature designs to make it uniquely yours. For example, the sapphire and diamond ring was created by adapting one of our existing designs, while the three-diamond pendant was developed as a completely new design.”

Sketches and basic CAD concepts allow clients to see their vision begin to take shape through the creative minds of the artists. “When desired, we create 3D printed prototypes of your design,” Reardon says. “These models give you the chance to see and hold a physical representation before final approval, making it easier to provide feedback and refine details.”

A wide range of precious metals, including gold in various carats, silver and platinum, is available, as are carefully sourced gemstones. The artists can also work with clients’ own gemstones, incorporating them into the newly designed piece.

The last step in the design process is one of refinement and approval. “We refine the design based on your feedback until it feels perfect,” says Reardon. “Nothing moves forward until you’re completely satisfied.”

The artists combine traditional metalsmithing techniques with modern precision. Pieces are individually crafted to ensure quality and authenticity. Finishing touches include setting the stone, polishing and adding patinas to highlight the design. “Finally, your completed piece is presented in our studio,” says Reardon, “a one-of-a-kind artwork that is both timeless and personal.”
