London District Studios: William Dill Abstracts

London District Studios will present the work of contemporary fine artist William Dill in a show titled Open to Interpretation: One Artist, Many Perspectives that will run through November 14. An opening reception will be held on Friday, October 14 from 5–10 p.m. Dill says he hopes that visitors to the gallery view his work and “react without preconception to the subject, color intensity and emotion it evokes.” To that end, he says, imagination in the eye of the beholder matters more than what titles may convey.

A native Mississippian, Dill works mostly in acrylics, but says he prefers the “aromas, texture and color intensity” of oils, allowing more freedom in creation. A career in technology and telecommunications sent him around the world, opening his eyes to other cultures, before he settled into art as a full-time career.

He regards his creative process as “art therapy,” saying that he recreates himself anew every time he sits down in front of the canvas. “Sound, color and vibration of the universe,” he says, “are the fuel for my inspirations.” His loose abstracts begin with images, memories and feelings. “Some are more deliberate and ‘left brain’ in the beginning,” Dill says. “Then a Zen moment kicks in and the next thing I am conscious of is the artwork I have created.”

After 40 years of living in metropolitan areas, Dill says that he is at home now in Tryon where he has found fellow artists to be “nurturing with a willingness to share how they create, what they create and their experiences in the art world and the business of art.”
