Spellbound Children’s Bookshop Hosts Author Jan Brett

Spellbound Children’s Bookshop will host New York Times bestselling author– illustrator Jan Brett at 5 p.m. Wednesday, November 30, at Vance Elementary School. The event includes a presentation by Brett and signing of her latest book, Gingerbread Christmas. Children will have an opportunity to interact with Brett, hear what inspires her books and learn to draw a character from Gingerbread Christmas.

“People at the presentations, children especially, love to see the drawing come to life,” says Brett. “I start with simple shapes that end up being very detailed characters. Usually, I also introduce them to a surprise guest, which gets a lot of smiles.”

Brett’s attention to detail also delights readers. “Children notice everything,” she says. “I think they especially like discovering the extra detail in the illustrations and finding a second story in the borders of my books.”

The presentation, a collaboration between Spellbound Children’s Bookshop and area schools, is one of many planned by the bookshop, which moved to a new location on Merrimon Avenue and celebrated its 12th anniversary this year. Hosting events is an important part of Spellbound’s commitment to fostering curiosity, imagination and independent thinking in children.

“Kids like coming to a place that’s built with them in mind and talking to our staff about the books they love,” says Leslie Hawkins, owner of Spellbound Children’s Bookshop. “We’re really excited to be involved in bringing Jan Brett to Asheville and connecting her with local fans of all ages.”

Vance Elementary School is at 98 Sulphur Springs Road, Asheville. Admission is free for the presentation. The signing line is limited to 300 tickets at $18.99 each. Guests should arrive between 3:30 and 4:40 p.m. Learn more and purchase tickets at spellboundbookshop.com or by calling 828.575.2266.
