Blue Spiral 1 begins each year with an invitational exhibit comprised of artists making their debut at the gallery. Titled New Times Three 2016, it contains works in a broad range of media and styles. This year’s invitational will be on display through February 27.
Jaydan Moore, a contemporary metalsmith, rescues silverware and platters, giving them new life as joined works that reference cell division. The prints he pulls from these platters are unusual and beautiful with their lace-like floral patterns.
Obscure imagery invites the viewer to delve deeper into Bill Killebrew’s lush oils. His works often depict with bold colors otherwise ordinary scenes.
Patty Carroll’s photographs also inexorably draw the viewer in. Like elaborate window displays, her staged compositions feature draped figures in color-coordinated environments.
Ceramicist Thomas Schmidt comments, “I am driven by a sense of discovery that develops as I investigate materials and their properties. I use methods such as mold-making, scanning, and photography to capture material moments.”
Often utilizing photographic techniques, James Boychuk-Hunter’s dramatic hand-pulled prints ties together observation, experience, and reflection.
Also continuing through February 27 are exhibits of endearing wood engravings and Moku Hanga prints by Andy Farkas, and two color-themed group exhibitions, Reflection: Silver Anniversary and Contrast: Black + White.
Located at 38 Biltmore Avenue, Blue Spiral 1 is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For further information, visit bluespiral1.com or call 828.251.0202.
