Blue Spiral 1 opens several new exhibitions in May including a four-person show featuring figurative cast glass by Dean Allison, dramatic wood sculpture by Morgan Herrin, enigmatic oils by Charles Ladson, and poignant photography by Mike Smith.
Dana Brown’s work is showcased in the gallery’s Small Format Room. She demonstrates remarkable proficiency with encaustic painting, rendering imagery of trains and machinery in layered and pigmented wax.
The gallery is also presenting several exhibitions in partnership with the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) conference in Asheville. This is a rare occasion to see sculptural jewelry at the downtown gallery.
Two celebrated WNC artists join forces for a show featuring collaborative and individual works with hand-drawn elements. Sculptural clay by Lisa Clague and wearable metal designs by jeweler Deb Karash pull inspiration from a variety of sources including the figure, flora and fauna.
C. James Meyer’s jewelry pieces double as small sculptures displayed in naturalistic shadowboxes when not worn. His organic forms made with precious materials reference details in nature such as leaves and river rocks.
The “Halstead Challenge” is a juried collection of 20 brooches with kinetic elements, each by a different jeweler. This collection will be on view around the time of the SNAGneXt conference, May 19–21.
Blue Spiral 1, 38 Biltmore Avenue, is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For further information, visit bluespiral1.com or call 828.251.0202.
