The winter schedule at the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (BMCM+AC) is chock-full of immersive, creative opportunities.
BMCM + AC will kick off the new year with the first installment of a new series, ELEMENTS OF BMC, which explores the fundamentals of creative practice at Black Mountain College in a range of artistic mediums and techniques. On Saturday, January 11, at 1 p.m., BMCM + AC communications coordinator Maya Rosenbaum will present a fiber and weaving workshop to launch the series. The workshop is appropriate for all ages and experience levels, free to attend and open to the public. No registration is required and all materials will be provided.

On Thursday, January 23, at 7 p.m., New York-based percussion and piano quartet Yarn/Wire will perform Bayou-borne, for Pauline by Annea Lockwood alongside BIOMES 6.1, the second realization of their collaboration with composer Katherine Young. “The most obvious thematic connection between the two works is the importance of ecological site-specificity,” says Laura Barger, pianist for Yarn/Wire.
“Bayou-borne, for example, uses a map of the six bayous that converge near Houston, TX as a musical guide for improvisation. Biomes features field recordings of a number of ecological sites important to both the original version of the installation—i.e. the oyster reefs being repopulated near Governor’s Island in NYC—as well as the site of its world premiere, Atlanta, GA.”
On Wednesday, February 12, at 7 p.m., wind and string quartet Hub New Music will perform new work by Yaz Lancaster alongside compositions by Angélica Negrón, Elijah Daniel Smith, Nico Muhly, Tyshawn Sorey and Andrew Norman. “All the pieces we’re playing were written for us,” says Michael Avitabile, Hub New Music’s director. “It makes performing the work so special, and our relationship with the composers makes for a really fun, collaborative experience.”
Both concerts are ticketed events with discounts available for members and students.
