Camaraderie Celebrates Complex Network of Printmaking and Book Arts
Book arts and printmaking are inherently intertwined in their mediums, concepts, and histories. Asheville BookWorks, located at 428 1/2 Haywood Road, will explore the intricacies and connections of these art forms through the upcoming show Camaraderie, which opens Friday, September 9, with a reception from 5:30–7 p.m., and runs through October.
What is a book? What defines a print? The book arts and printmaking community is a complex network, with artists often contributing through both mediums. Camaraderie commends and memorializes the relationship between these crafts. Featured works explore the latent association and beauty of the two mediums.
“I am an artist who has found books to be a fertile format,” says Karen Kunc, and hers is a common sentiment among these talented artists, some as local as Asheville and others from as far away as Nebraska and California. Other participating artists are Anne Beck, Laurie Corral, Allison Dennis, Gwen Diehn, Laura Ladendorf, Dyann Myers, Carol Norby, and Kalmia Strong. Also participating are curators Kristen Necessary, a studio artist in Brevard, and Rachel Singel, an assistant professor at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.
“One of the things that drew me to both printmaking and bookbinding is the sense of community that they create, and this show brings to light some of the friendships that have been made over the years,” says Rachel. “The history of the relationship between books and print is truly a fascinating one! In bringing together a group of talented artists and their different approaches, this exhibition gives us a glimpse of the infinite possibilities!
