Nationally recognized for showcasing fine American art and craft, Grovewood Gallery will mark its 25th anniversary in 2017. The gallery’s annual Holiday Sip & Shop event will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on December 9–10 and 16–17. All gallery merchandise will be ten percent off and holiday shoppers can enjoy complimentary wine, warm cider and cookies. Local artists will be performing craft demonstrations and interacting with guests from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
On Friday, December 9, painter Cynthia Wilson will demonstrate acrylic layering on canvas. Known for her brilliantly colored landscape paintings, Wilson was juried into the inaugural Art in Bloom show at The Gallery at Flat Rock and was recently featured in Who’s Who in American Art. Also demonstrating will be fiber artist Karen Kennedy, who makes pumpkins and snowmen using needle felting with locally dyed wool. Kennedy is a graduate of Haywood Community College’s Professional Crafts Program.
Saturday, December 10, doll maker Charlie Patricolo will work on cloth dolls— including Bear-y Merry Christmas Bears—in various stages of completion and transform them into delightful creations. “A friend of mine was doing a ‘spirit bear’ shaped glass bead and I just fell in love with the shape and began imagining what I could do with cloth,” she says. “I teach dollmaking and find that demonstrating gives me a great way to connect with folks who are curious and wonder if they could do it. If they can use a sewing machine, generally I can help them make a doll.” Visitors will have the opportunity to enter a free drawing for one of Patricolo’s signature dolls.

The demonstrator for Friday, December 16, is jewelry artist Terri Lefler, who studied under master metalsmith Bill Churlik of Earthspeak Arts, where she developed the foundation and methods that define her style. Her thesis concentrated on how the geometries underlying designs potentially influence the human experience. “I continue to be inspired by geometries—both organic and pure—and how people connect with and relate to them,” she says. “I will be demonstrating a few different styles of stone setting and how they contribute to the overall design.”
On Saturday, December 17, jewelry artist Joanna Gollberg will demonstrate silversmithing, stone setting, and metal piercing techniques. Gollberg teaches jewelry making at Penland School of Crafts and at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts. She has written four books on making handcrafted jewelry, all titles published by Lark Crafts.
All demonstrating artists will have original works of art for sale. The ten percent discount does not apply to demonstrators’ artwork or custom/special orders.
Grovewood Gallery is housed in the historic weaving and woodworking complex of Biltmore Industries. The 11-acre campus is also home to Asheville’s only Antique Car Museum, the North Carolina Homespun Museum, Golden Fleece Restaurant, nine working artist studios and an outdoor sculpture garden. The property, with its six cottages built from 1917–1924, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
