The Southern Highland Craft Guild (SHCG) will offer visitors and residents an opportunity to purchase handmade crafts and art for their loved ones at the annual Holiday Makers Sales. Held the first two Saturdays in December from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Folk Art Center, the Holiday Makers Sale offers an opportunity for Guild members to liquidate overstocks and annual inventory, providing shoppers with discounts of up to 50 percent. Jude Stuecker, who has been with the Guild since 2004, will have a booth with her hand-dyed and hand-printed textiles at the Holiday Maker Sale. “Many artists sell ‘seconds’ of their work, which may be pieces that are slightly flawed but still usable,” she says. “Since I can repair most mistakes with sewing, I generally sell a few styles of clothing that I will no longer be making in the coming year— lots of scarves and simple shirts that I piece together from my scraps.”
Stuecker says the Holiday Makers Sale is one of her favorite events of the year, and she often completes much of her personal holiday shopping there. “Many of the crafts I covet year-round at the fairs and shops are suddenly quite affordable this one day of the year, so that’s a huge bonus,” she says. Nearly 70 Guild members will be participating over the course of the two sales with a different group each weekend.
The Folk Art Center is located at Milepost 382 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville. For more information, call 828.298.7928 or visit CraftGuild.org.
