A Show of Hands: Calligraphy Conference

From a book made by Annie Cicale, produced at Asheville BookWorks

The 35th annual International Calligraphy Conference, titled A Show of Hands, will be held at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa from June 25 through July 2. The conference is sponsored by the Black Mountain Center for the Arts.

At the conference will be an international collection of the finest instructors and suppliers to the art of calligraphy. It is the first time the meeting has been held in a city in the Southeast. It is open to people of all skill levels, from beginner to master.

If you’re new to the art, you can take beginning classes from some of the best teachers in the world. If you possess more experience, there are classes that will help take you to the next level.

It’s an excellent opportunity for area residents, as the attendance fees are substantially lower for local people. And, if you live here, you can choose to skip the dormitory housing, making the event even more of a bargain.

For those who have an interest in calligraphy but are unable to attend the conference, Grovewood Gallery has invited a number of the world-renowned calligraphic artists to participate in a special showing of their works from June 25 through July 24. There will be an opening reception with some of the artists from 2–6 P.M. on Saturday, June 25. Grovewood Gallery is located at 111 Grovewood Road adjacent to the Omni Grove Park Inn.
