Artist Greg Krolick Celebrates Old-time Music

Grovewood Gallery Debuts Southern on High An Exhibit of Paintings by Greg Krolick

Western North Carolina artist Greg Krolick has created a series of colorful, high-energy paintings that will be in an exhibit titled Southern on High at Grovewood Gallery from August 13 through September 18. Greg’s paintings celebrate the heroes of old-time music and the beauty of Appalachians. The exhibit is curated by LouAnne Jordan, Grovewood Gallery’s events coordinator.

There will be an opening reception from 3–6 p.m. on Saturday, August 13, that will feature live music, local craft beer, and the opportunity to talk with the artist.

Greg was born in 1957 in Ohio. A few years later, his family moved to the Pacific Northwest, where he began his lifelong love of making art and music. He says his early life as an artist was spent secretly painting the rowdy encounters he envisioned occurring between cowboys, spacemen, and the underwear models from his mother’s Family Circle magazines.

For several years, he worked as a cowboy in Oregon, herding cattle and mending fences, spending his free time painting, playing the fiddle, and making furniture.

Greg now lives deep in a holler in Little Pine where he loves being surrounded by nature. He says he is satisfied with living his life as a “reclusive hillbilly.”

“My paintings are deeply inspired by the music and beautiful otherworldliness of these southern mountains,” says Greg. “I make my art using mostly Masonite, old wood, roofing tin, and carved sticks. Painting in vibrant, primary colors, I create a shadow box world that invites you in…and at times jumps out at you. Watch for snakes!”
