Woolworth Walk’s exhibit of Sarah Faulkner’s work, titled “Cottages and Acres,” will be displayed in the F.W. Front Gallery through October 30. An opening reception will be held Friday, October 7, from 5–7 p.m. The show features two facets of the artist’s creative life—woodworking and painting—and celebrates the Appalachian Mountains in architecture and landscape.
Faulkner’s whimsical lamps incorporate historic cottages, farmhouses and barns in their design, and are a nod to her woodworking past as well as to her upbringing on a farm in Virginia. There, she says, she “lived with ultimate freedom, simplicity and imagination” that today influences her work.
After moving to the Asheville area in 2006, she began to paint with beeswax, “a translucent and misty material,” she says, “that blends and softens colors to give the work an element of light.” Anything found in the natural world is a ripe subject for one of her paintings.
Besides art, environmental activism is important to Faulkner. A portion of the proceeds from her show will be donated to Friends of the Earth, an advocacy group that seeks to change public perception and policy on everything from air pollution to genetic engineering, including campaigns to limit the use of pesticides dangerous to bees.
When she began to work with beeswax, Faulkner says she “learned of the worldwide devastation occurring to the honeybee population.” She hopes that her work conveys “the important relationships we have with trees, flowers, animals and all things in the natural world.”
F.W. During a recent trip to Asheville I was fortunate to at least buy two prints of Sarah’s work: “the givers “ and “good morning”. They are now framed and gave very visible spaces in my home—they bring me such joy and that sense of peace she wants! Friends that have seen them share those feelings too. I love that everything in “the givers” is giving.
