The Black Mountain Center for the Arts is nothing if not diverse, as evidenced by its May offerings. For the third year in a row, the Arts Center is proud to present “Celtic guitar god” Robin Bullock in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 7. Tickets for the concert are $20.
Robin is a busy touring musician and a familiar face to audiences of the Swannanoa Gathering at Warren Wilson College and Swannanoa Solstice at Diana Wortham Theater in Asheville.
He tours with legendary singer/songwriters Tom Paxton and Janis Ian, and is in the process of recording the first volume of Bach Cello Suites transposed for mandolin and also a Christmas album with his “guitar brother” Steve Baughman.
The tenth annual Art in Bloom takes place June 9-11. There will be a gallery show in the Upper Gallery of the Arts Center that contains floral designs and other art on loan from regional galleries. There’s also a gala preview dinner party, a cottage garden tour, and a plein air painting display.
The Upper Gallery can be viewed during intermission of the Front Porch Theatre’s spring offering of The Dixie Swim Club, written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten and produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service. The show runs May 20, 21, 27, and 28 at 7:30 p.m., and May 22 and 29 at 2 p.m. The cast and crew are made up of Black Mountain residents who are veterans of the stage. Tickets are $15.
The Dixie Swim Club is a poignant comedy that spans 30 years and centers around five Southern women who, by meeting at the Outer Banks each year, rekindle relationships from their time on the college swim team. The women catch up on each other’s lives and “goings-on,” meddling whenever possible and relying on each other for support. When a life-changing event impacts one of the women, the rest demonstrate how teamwork can end up in an unusual and surprising conclusion.
The Black Mountain Center for the Arts is located at 225 W. State Street in the Old City Hall. For tickets to these events and for more information, visit blackmountainarts.org or call the Center at 828.669.0930.
