Pan Harmonia Offers Two Unique Concerts

The young musicians of GeneratioNext! will present a concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 7, at St. Matthias Church, 1 Dundee Street in Asheville. Admission is free. The concert features a talented woodwind quintet from AC Reynolds High School.

GeneratioNext! is a program sponsored for the past three years by Pan Harmonia, an Asheville-based professional chamber music collective. The program is supported by a grant from The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, and is directed by bassoonist Rosalind Buda. It provides high school musicians with the opportunity for peer collaboration and professional coaching.

La Bombarde!—a concert of bombarde, bassoon, and organ—will be presented at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 28, at First Presbyterian Church, 40 Church Street in Asheville. Experience the power and beauty of the bombarde, a double-reed instrument used traditionally in Brittany, France, for dances, often along with organ, bagpipes, and drums.

This special concert will focus on the bombarde (played by Rosalind Buda) and organ (played by Barbara Weiss), along with some inventive arrangements for the bassoon, the bombarde’s double-reed “cousin.” Tickets are $15 ($20 at the door and $5 for students) and are available at panharmonia.org.

Two days prior (at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 26), Pan Harmonia is hosting a Chamber Music Chat with Rosalind Buda, who will explore the bombarde and its use in Breton music. This free event will be held at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville.
