Woolworth Walk will highlight the work of local artist Rob O’Sheeran in the FW Gallery for the month of December. O’Sheeran’s work is distinctive in his use of recycled windows as canvases.
“Every window—the frame, shape and number of panes—inspires the subject matter,” he says. “I can repeat images to create a familiar pattern or use large-scale art by painting across the glass to produce a unified image. A window provides an opportunity to create visual depth dimensionality.
While the frames define the borders of each painting, challenging me to marry the space in front of me with the image I have in mind, the glass allows nearly endless depth to explore, layer and create.”
While O’Sheeran has always had an interest in repurposing discarded objects, the recycled windows also serve an economic purpose. “As an art student at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, art supplies were expensive,” he says. “I learned to become resourceful pretty quickly.”
For the Woolworth show, the artist selected pieces that display a diversity of subject matter, brushstrokes, technique and composition. “I’d like to think I offer something unique by combining a colorful palette, a distinctive ‘canvas’ and a wide range of subject matters,” he says.
O’Sheeran has been represented by Woolworth Walk for 20 years, and the timing of this show feels significant to him. “While I’m always grateful to have the opportunity to share my work with the Asheville community, I think this moment is especially poignant,” he says. “I hope my art can maybe ease the pain so many people are feeling right now. I know the painting process has been particularly instrumental in processing the roller coaster of emotions I’ve had since Helene.”
There will be a reception for the exhibition on First Friday, December 6, from 4–6 p.m. Woolworth Walk is located at 25 Haywood Street in downtown Asheville. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 828.254.9234 or visit WoolworthWalk.com.
