Adam Booth
Story Weaver Adam Booth at Buffalo Nickel with Vixi Jil Glenn
One of the most popular young storytellers in the country, Adam Booth will be performing at Buffalo Nickel, 747 Haywood Road in West Asheville, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17. Also appearing will be Asheville’s own Vixi Jil Glenn. The event is sponsored by David Joe Miller Presents, an ongoing, bimonthly storytelling series at Buffalo Nickel.
Adam is a true Appalachian storyteller, born and raised in West Virginia. His study of the region’s history and culture form the core of his award-winning work. He has performed at the National Storytelling Festival and at the Teller-in-Residence Program at the International Storytelling Center, both in Jonesborough, Tennessee. His recordings have won numerous awards, including two Parent’s Choice Awards and three Storytelling World Awards. He credits generations of the area’s storytellers with helping to shape his humor and insights.
He will also be presenting a storytelling and writing workshop titled “Mining The Fool’s Gold: Turning Family Stories into Tall Tales.” It will take place at the Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative at Lenoir-Rhyne University from 6–9 p.m. on Thursday, August 18.
Vixi Jil Glenn is an Asheville native whose family’s history extends back generations to when Asheville was known as Morristown prior to 1797. “My father is named Jack,” she says proudly. “So they named me Jil,” adding maybe that’s why she grew up telling stories. She says she learned the art of storytelling from the late Ted Hicks, son of famed Appalachian storyteller Ray Hicks of Beech Mountain.
“I think it is important to keep the old stories alive,” says Vixi. “Maybe one day I can inspire a child or children to keep up the tradition.”
Tickets are $12 online at eventbrite.com or $14 at the door. Call 828.575.2844 for dinner reservations. Cost of the workshop is $35 and tickets are also available at eventbrite.com.
