The Aaron Goldberg Trio at Diana Wortham Theatre

The New York Times described American jazz pianist Aaron Goldberg as a “post-bop pianist of exemplary taste and range.” The Aaron Goldberg Trio will be in concert at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, at Diana Wortham Theatre. Performing with Aaron will be bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland. The three collaborated on Aaron’s newest album, The Now, their fifth venture together, going all the way back to Aaron’s debut album in 1998. Aaron has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Guillermo Klein, among others.

You can look forward to hearing something new, because one of the intriguing things about the art of jazz is that no two concerts are alike. As Aaron says, the music is created “in the dynamic plane of the present.”

Aaron began taking piano lessons when he was just seven years old and was already playing jazz by the time he was 14. Three years later, he moved to New York City to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and was soon playing in New York clubs.

His parents wanted him to get a traditional college education, so he went to Harvard where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in history and science.

While in school, however, he continued to focus on his music. As a freshman, he was awarded the International Association of Jazz Educators’ Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Fellowship.

Down Beat magazine cited Aaron’s “quick-witted harmonic reflexes and cut-to-the-chase sense of narrative logic.” These qualities are evident as his trio ranges seamlessly from Brazilian ballads to roaring bebop.
