Paintings by Philip DeAngelo, Laurel of Asheville cover artist in September 2009, are being featured throughout the month of May at F.W. Front Gallery at Woolworth Walk. There will be an opening reception from 5–7 p.m. on Friday, May 6.
For years, Philip and his wife Tina lived on an island near Ocean City, New Jersey, where they had a small farm. “I could surf in the morning, go spend some time at home with the horses, and be at my gallery within about 20 minutes. It was a great life.” And then, in 2007, he and Tina decided to take a long overdue vacation, selecting Asheville as their destination. They fell in love with the area and soon moved here.
Philip sees the world in terms of simple shapes, saturated colors, and importantly textures. He says he believes in a God who is in love with beauty and who has created this vibrant planet to reflect that beauty. He bases much of his work on the proportionally pleasing aspects inherent in the “golden section.” He points out that there is an order to nature that is there waiting to be discovered.
Especially in his landscape works, Philip has the ability to distill a scene to its most basic components. This has a way of rendering what is important, but at the same time leaving viewers to fill in the scenes based on their own life experiences.
John Horrocks, owner of BlackBird Frame and Art, says, “Philip is known for his rich palette, depth of color, and the textural element of his paintings. Using a variety of substrates, his subject is often an uncluttered landscape, where it is the form of the trees, combined with the mood set by the sky and the movement created by wind that convey his message.”
