Create your own self-guided tour for the WNC Yarn Crawl, May 5–8. Eleven participating shops are spread across Western North Carolina and include Asheville and the towns of Black Mountain, Candler, Weaverville, Saluda, Franklin, Burnsville, and Morganton. Each store has planned different mini-events and promotions throughout the weekend, including special demonstrations and lessons. At each spot, guests can grab a raffle ticket for their chance to win fiber-related prizes. Treasure maps listing all locations are available at individual stores or online before the event. Elizabeth Schell, of Purl’s Yarn Emporium, says that everyone works together to plan this event. “Though each of the local yarn stores is unique, what we hold in common unites us: we love yarn; we love creating with our hands; we love helping others learn to create things with their hands.” Greta Hillin owns The Knitting Diva and is excited to be participating once again. “It is an exciting time to get a chance to meet new customers and make new friends in the fiber community,” says Greta. “We will be offering lots of daily door prizes and we are working on an exciting new local yarn just for our crawlers.” Elizabeth adds, “The Annual Yarn Crawl is always an especially exciting time for yarn lovers in the Asheville area. And I don’t think it’s just because of all the special giveaways or even exclusive items (though those are definitely a draw!). I think it’s more about everyone from the region traveling around together to visit the shops and seeing each other. Much like the weekend of the Southeastern Animal Fiber Festival in October, it’s reunion time for yarnies.” For more information, including a list of participating shops, visit wncyarncrawl.com or their Facebook page.
