Born in Scotland, artist Patricia Cotterill has traveled the world extensively. Before her husband Stuart’s career brought them to America in 1980, she lived in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Her experiences with diverse cultures have influenced her work in subject matter and technique. Her art provides a glimpse into scenes of everyday life.
Oils are her medium of choice. Her farm animal portraits—and pet portraits on commission—convey realistic expressions and character. About 12 years ago, Patricia took a photo of a cow in southern Virginia where her daughter lives. “And I thought I’d try painting it,” says Patricia. “I just fell in love with painting cows and progressed to sheep and goats.” These days, Patricia is working on a new collection of still lifes, such as antique typewriters or teacups.
Last year, four large pieces of her work were purchased for the HGTV Urban Oasis television series. Patricia is a member of the Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League. Her work can be found locally at Mountain Nest Gallery in Black Mountain and in her studio at Riverside Studios, which is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Patricia Cotterill’s working studio is located in the Riverside Studios, 174 W. Haywood Street in the River Arts District. For more information, visit patriciacotterill.com or e-mail patcotterill@yahoo.com.
