Located in Black Mountain, Red House Studios & Gallery is home to the Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League (SVFAL), one of the oldest all-volunteer arts leagues in Western North Carolina. Founded in 1967, SVFAL inspires artistic growth and excellence among artists through education and exhibition. Since 2012, the league has operated from the Red House on the grounds of the Monte Vista Hotel, which is among the places you’ll find league members’ work. “Come and enjoy what we have to offer,” says artist Susan Shaw who served as SVFAL president for the past two years. This month, Jack Williams takes on the role. In the Red House, you’ll find 14 working artists in seven studios, as well as two classrooms, three galleries, and a library. Twice-weekly live drawing sessions are open to the public for a small fee. Shows change every two months. About 150 current members work in a range of mediums, such as ceramics, painting, drawing, and photography, among others. SVFAL memberships are $35 each per year. The 47th annual juried show will take place August 7 through September, with an opening reception from 5–7 p.m. on August 7. The current exhibit, “Americana: A Slice of Life in the Country We Call Home,” is on display through August 2.
Red House Studios & Gallery is located at 310 West State Street in Black Mountain. For more information, including classes and workshops, visit svfalarts.org, their Facebook page, or call 828.669.0351.
