Everyone Can Have Some More with The Learning Community School’s Spring Musical Oliver!

When it comes to producing a full-length spring musical, The Learning Community (TLC) School in Black Mountain has it down to an art. Not only does the show involve all 75 students in kindergarten through eighth grade, but the parents also contribute their time and talents, from costume design and makeup to lighting and props. The annual tradition began in 2002 with Charlotte’s Web.

From April 22–24, TLC School will produce Oliver!, based on Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. The production will take place at Owens High School Auditorium where audience members are certain to enjoy such well-loved songs as “Food Glorious Food,” “Consider Yourself,” and “I’ll Do Anything.” There will also be a silent auction and a raffle.

“One thing I love about this piece is that it has some real complexity to it,” says director Tom Tracy, who is also a parent alumnus and a language arts teacher at TLC School. “It’s a story that has notable human conflict in it. It’s also a story of hope and possibility inside of dismal circumstances during the 1800s as seen from the viewpoint of youth. The songs are so bright; young people finding hope. It’s nice to pull from a piece of classic literature that shines with such promise and possibility.”

Parent-artists have worked together to create the magical sets, including Fagan’s Lair, the workhouse, and other recognizable scenes from the story. Artist, parent, and set designer Ralston Fox Smith is joined by Asheville artists Monroe Moore, Spencer hero, and Libba Tracey. Monroe shares, “We take this pretty seriously because we want to do the best for the kids in our community—both the ones on stage and the ones in the audience.”

Performances take place on Friday, April 22, at 6 p.m., Saturday, April 23, at 4 p.m., and Sunday, April 24, at 2 p.m. Tickets ($13 general admission, $7 for children five and younger) are expected to sell out, so advance purchase is recommended.
