Realistic Watercolors Illustrate the Beauty of WNC

Watercolor exhibition at North Carolina Arboretum

Artist, James Scott Morrison

Titled The Magic of Western North Carolina, the newest exhibition at The North Carolina Arboretum contains scenes of Western North Carolina magnificently captured in watercolors. On display through September, this show features more than 80 realistic watercolor paintings of landscapes, life, and landmarks by award-winning artist and Hendersonville resident James Scott Morrison.

“For a watercolor artist, Western North Carolina is quite an incredible place,” says James. “From its pastoral landscapes, to its architecture, to its people, the region is so full of emotion and character that it’s easy to connect with my subjects. I hope that this exhibit provides those same connections to the viewers.”

A veteran and retired aerospace professional, James was introduced to painting early on in life by his father, Morie, who rendered cartoons for a nationally syndicated comic strip. While flying as a pilot during the Cold War, James became fascinated by the sky’s vibrant sunsets and dramatic cloud formations. At age 34, just three years after transitioning into corporate life, James suffered a heart attack. His father suggested that he paint to relieve stress, so James spent the next 14 years of his business career pursuing art as well. In 1989, he retired and moved to Hendersonville.

You can also pick up a copy of James’ newly published book of fine art watercolors at the Arboretum’s Connections Gallery gift shop.
