The Wortham Center for the Performing Arts presents YAMATO: The Drummers of Japan on Wednesday and Thursday, February 12 and Friday 13, at 7 p.m. This dynamic Taiko drumming troupe will bring their new production, Hito no Chikara, which translates to “The Power of Human Strength,” to the stage.

“YAMATO is rooted in tradition and excellence,” says Rae Geoffrey, managing director of the Wortham Center. “The art of Taiko drumming is revered in Japanese culture, and YAMATO has shared it across the world for over 30 years in over 50 countries.”
Their performances feature a vast array of Taiko drums, some of which are enormous and require immense physical strength to play.
“High energy permeates from the stage to the audience, whether it’s a full ensemble drum sequence or a tender moment from a featured soloist,” says Geoffrey. “YAMATO brings something for every age group to enjoy. The Wortham sees many families attend—parents and grandparents bringing children and grandchildren.”
In addition to the evening performances, YAMATO will also present a daytime Student Series performance on Thursday, February 13, at 10 a.m. This performance is currently waitlist only and is recommended for grades K-12.
The Wortham Center for the Performing Arts is located at 18 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville. Tickets for the evening performances can be purchased by calling the Wortham Center’s box office at 828-257-4530 x1 or by visiting worthamarts.org.
