Seize the Moment with “Now & Then” Art Exhibit

Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League Susan HanningEverything in life changes. Illustrating the fleeting nature of time, “Now & Then” is the latest art exhibit with works by members of the Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League. The show will on display at the Red House Studios & Gallery May 6–30, with an opening reception on Friday, May 6, from 5–7 p.m.

“My vision is that viewers will stop and take a moment to reflect upon the thinking and process that went into each work of art,” says Meryl Meyer, an SVFAL member and the show’s curator. “Then (they’ll) reflect upon how in their own life’s experiences things evolve and change. The possibilities are endless.”

A wide variety of mediums will be represented, including oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, collage, sculptures, fabric, encaustic, and photography. You’ll find examples of realism, impressionism, and abstractionism. Susan Hanning’s two featured paintings depict the Yellowstone River in Montana. During a rafting trip in 1984, she snapped a photo of the river, and in 2003, she created a realistic painting based on the photograph.

Then, in 2009, she painted a second piece using a more colorful palette. “I had been thinking about transforming a scene from nature that I had already done into a more colorful one using all shades of red, magenta, purple, and orange,” says Susan.

The Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League is located at the Red House Studios & Gallery, 310 W. State Street in Black Mountain.
