The Laurel of Asheville is a lifestyle magazine focused on the arts, culture, and communities of Western North Carolina, and submitted events should fall within this context. If your event occurs over several days, please submit multiple events. Events extending beyond a month will not be accepted. All submissions are subject to editorial approval and edits for clarity and style before being published online. If you are going to include a photograph, please be certain that you have the rights to utilize that image. If there is a question about image rights, we may remove the image. Also, images should be no larger than 2000 pixels wide. Large images will prevent the event from being submitted. Please allow up to 5 days for your even to be posted. Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika: Nielsen Big Ideas Lecture at Warren Wilson College

NYU’s Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika, producer of award-winning “Uncivil” podcast, to speak at Warren Wilson on “Police, Podcasts, and Politics”.

Chenjerai Kumanyika is an assistant professor in NYU’s Arthur L.Carter Journalism Institute. Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika specializes in using historically focused – narrative non-fiction audio journalism to critique the ideology of American myths about issues such as race, the Civil War, and policing. He has published in a variety of scholarly journals and public venues such as This American Life, The Intercept, NPR, Transom, and VICE. Kumanyika is also the co-creator, co-executive producer and co-host of Uncivil, Gimlet Media’s Peabody Award-winning podcast on the Civil War and he is the collaborator for Scene on Radio’s “Seeing White,” series and Season 4 on the history of American democracy. Kumanyika’s work has been recognized with several prestigious honors including the George Foster Peabody Award (2018) for Uncivil and The Media Literate Media Award (NAMLE) for Scene on Radio (2021). In 2021, he received the Union of Democratic Communications’ Dallas Smythe Award for his career accomplishments and advocacy.
