The Laurel of Asheville is a lifestyle magazine focused on the arts, culture, and communities of Western North Carolina, and submitted events should fall within this context. If your event occurs over several days, please submit multiple events. Events extending beyond a month will not be accepted. All submissions are subject to editorial approval and edits for clarity and style before being published online. If you are going to include a photograph, please be certain that you have the rights to utilize that image. If there is a question about image rights, we may remove the image. Also, images should be no larger than 2000 pixels wide. Large images will prevent the event from being submitted. Please allow up to 5 days for your even to be posted. Make Your Mark: Drawing Improv Workshop | Taught by Greg Benge

An empty page is a lot like an empty stage. Many people who want to draw are stopped by self-consciousness and comparison. Even working artists and performers can become rigid, disconnected from spontaneity.
In this 2-day workshop, we’ll employ the values of improvisation to increase creative confidence and encourage play.
We’ll cover things like:
– Simple drawing tips and practical techniques for clearer, more confident mark-making
– Discussing how drawings can generate scenes, and how scenes can generate drawings
– Appreciating drawing as a live, relational act—not a final product
– Visual drawing exercises that build upon each other
This 2-day workshop is designed for improvisors of all artistic skill levels to foster thinking visually and explore the vibrant relationship between drawing and performing. Participants will learn emerging improvisational drawing formats and collaborate to design their own novel format.
