Sonic Shadows: Featuring Min Xiao-Fen, Zack Page, with master puppeteer Hobey Ford
July 26, 2025 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
$25
“Sonic Shadows” brings to life the timeless romance between Emperor Wu of Han (Liu Che, 141 BC–87 BC) and his beloved concubine, Lady Li. After Lady Li’s passing, a courtier’s shadow puppet play comforted the grieving emperor, becoming his favorite pastime. Now, witness Hobey Ford’s masterful puppetry as his creative figures come to life, moving in perfect harmony with evocative music composed and performed by Min Xiao-Fen on pipa, sanxian, guqin, and voice—capturing the drama and passion of this legendary love story. Zack Page’s captivating bass soundscapes deepen the emotional resonance, enriching the journey of this tale. This unforgettable fusion of storytelling, music, and movement promises a performance you won’t want to miss.
This evening showcases the first work-in-progress performance of this production. The first set will feature a performance of “Sonic Shadows”. In the second set, the artists will engage in a discussion with the audience about the progress of our project, followed by a Q&A. To bring the show to a dynamic close, Min Xiao-Fen will lead an interactive segment where the audience participates with their voices, improvising alongside Hobey Ford’s puppetry movements.
