The National Forest Foundation (NFF), the official nonprofit partner of the U.S. Forest Service, announces the 7th annual National Forest Week taking place June 9–15. This nationwide celebration invites all Americans to explore, appreciate, and support the 193 million acres of national forests and grasslands where we come alive.
There are 154 National Forests and 20 National Grasslands across the United States, and 7 in 10 Americans live within a two-hour drive of a National Forest or Grassland. In most cases, these spaces are free to access and far less crowded than National Parks.
“National Forest Week celebrates the unmatched outdoor experiences found in our national forests. From hiking, biking, and hunting to fishing, paddling, and camping, these 193 million acres offer something for everyone,” says Dieter Fenkart-Froeschl, President & CEO of the National Forest Foundation. “This summer, we invite all Americans to get outside, explore their public lands, and join the National Forest Foundation in caring for them.”
Throughout National Forest Week™, the NFF and local partners are hosting a variety of community events to engage the public in outdoor recreation and stewardship.
Asheville events include:
- June 7 | G5 Trail Collective trail work day at Camp Grier
- June 10 | Community celebration and panel discussion at Blueprint for Impact
- June 14 | Pisgah Area SORBA volunteer trail work and guided mountain bike ride
- June 14 | G5 Trail Collective trail work day on the Grandfather Ranger District
In addition to the community events, nature lovers nationwide are invited to enter the National Forest Week™ Photo Contest for a chance to win prizes from RVshare, Southwest Airlines, Big Agnes, and other top outdoor brands. The contest will run through June 15 and is open to all. Photos must be taken in a U.S. National Forest or Grassland.
