Lysander Piano Trio
On Sunday, January 12, at 4 p.m., the Asheville Chamber Music Series (ACMS) welcomes the Lysander Piano Trio for a performance of music by Robert Schumann, Dmitri Shostakovich, Frank Bridge and Felix Mendelssohn. The concert will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Asheville.
Shakespeare’s Lysander, of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, inspired the group’s name. The trio formed at The Juilliard School and launched in the 2010-2011 season, receiving top honors in competitions, including the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the J. C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition, where, in 2011, the musicians received first prize.
Since that time, the ensemble has performed around the US at notable venues and festivals. Members are Itamar Zorman (violin), Michael Katz (cello) and Liza Stepanova (piano). The trio is known for its “polished and spirited interpretations,” says Polly Feitzinger, member of ACMS’s board of trustees. The Lysander Piano Trio has developed a reputation for creating programs that connect well-known masterworks with pieces by lesser known and underrepresented composers, discovering common threads across cultures and times. The Strad, a UK-based classical music magazine, has praised the Lysander Piano Trio for its “incredible ensemble, passionate playing, articulate and imaginative ideas and wide palette of colors.” In 2021, the trio released Mirrors, featuring world-premiere recordings of six works commissioned or premiered by the group.
ACMS presents the Goldmund Quartet on February 28, and in April will host the Aspen String Trio. Tickets for all performances are available on the website, and youth under the age of 25 are admitted free.
The 2024-2025 season marks the 72nd year of the Asheville Chamber Music Series. The non-profit ACMS is one of the oldest chamber music organizations in the US, and has sponsored more than 295 concerts by some of the world’s most celebrated classical musicians.
The First Presbyterian Church of Asheville is located at 40 Church Street, in downtown Asheville. To learn more about the Asheville Chamber Music Series and to purchase tickets, visit AshevilleChamberMusic.org.
