New Asheville Design District is a Destination for All Things Home

The Asheville Design District (ADD) is a newly recognized sector that encompasses businesses related to the home, including builders, architects, designers, furniture, furnishings, antiques, pottery, art, landscape architects, engineers, paint studios, home décor and architectural salvage, as well as associated vendor showrooms such as plumbing, painting and lighting. The ADD features approximately 60 area businesses, with its geographical boundary stretching from the I-40 exit along Sweeten Creek to the Biltmore Entrance, and along Swannanoa River Road from Biltmore Avenue to Tunnel Road.

Leading the charge in creating this district are Laura and Sean Sullivan, owners of Atelier Maison. Sean is also president of Living Stone Design + Build and Laura is the owner and principal designer of ID.ology Interiors & Design. “This movement is bringing jobs to our neighborhood, increasing commerce and cleaning up the corridor by way of development,” says Sean. “It’s an existing, concentrated core of businesses already operating in the area. We just need to get the word out and support them.” Some businesses that have shown early support for the ADD include Sweeten Creek Antiques and Mountain Paint and Decorating.

The ADD is an unincorporated nonprofit and is also a member of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce. Continued awareness and promotion of the ADD will help with the next stages of securing funding for district signage and other projects. Laura and Sean have already seen tangible results from discussing the district. “As a direct result of us promoting this, some of our subcontractors are trying to find space to open an office in the ADD,” says Laura. “We are also working with a tile vendor who wants to open a showroom here.”
