Named the “Pattern Whisperer” because of her extensive understanding of design, drafting, and fit, custom clothier Susan Stowell has been designing and sewing for most of her life. With quality crafting and expertise, she works intuitively and collaboratively with clients, from expert fitting and tailoring services to her made-to-order fashions for women, men, and children.
“It’s truly a craft,” says Susan. “There is focus, intention, energy that goes into it. There’s precision. I connect with my clients; I listen to what they want.” At Susan’s design studio and workshop, she offers a curriculum of couture sewing and patternmaking classes. Students learn to fine-tune their skills, draft by hand, and integrate technical learning with artistic visions. This month, she leads a pants patternmaking course with Haywood Community College.
Susan joined the rich fiber arts community of Asheville ten years ago. She’s a member of Local Cloth, Inc. and Design Divas. From custom shirts for men to unique and vintage-inspired wedding dresses, Susan designs comfortable garments that are a perfect fit.
