Walk a Mile Asheville to Benefit Our VOICE

By Leah Shapiro

In 2010, Robin Payne, former development coordinator for Our VOICE, and volunteer Emily Balcken came across the national event called “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: the Men’s March to End Rape, Sexual and Gender Violence.” “We thought, Now that’s an event that Asheville could get behind! It’s fun, it’s a bit quirky, it’s an opportunity for people to do something! And get behind it, Asheville did!” Emily told The Laurel.

On Saturday, May 7, participants in “Walk a Mile Asheville” will go a mile around downtown beginning and ending at Pack Square Park. Registration and check-in begin at 10 a.m. The walk begins at 11 a.m.

Walk a Mile Asheville to Benefit Our VOICE

This event is the biggest annual fundraiser for Our VOICE, Buncombe County’s sexual assault services agency. Emily says this event is also a symbolic gesture of community responsibility and solidarity as well as a fun way to raise awareness about a very serious issue in a family-friendly environment.

Over the years, the title of the event changed from “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” to “Walk a Mile Asheville” to recognize that men as well as women are affected by sexual violence. This year’s theme is community. Once all the walkers have returned, the high-heel trophy award ceremony takes place in categories such as most spirited team and highest fundraising individual.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own shoes of any kind. High heels will be available for a $5 rental, but the availability of correct sizes cannot be guaranteed. (Although it is fun and creates great social commentary, men are certainly not required to wear high heels.) The whole family is invited to participate.

“We are thrilled at the community coming together to raise awareness about sexual violence,” says Angélica Wind, executive director of Our VOICE. “Silence is often our biggest barrier in addressing the issue. On May 7th, the community will raise their voice to say that sexual violence will not be tolerated and if you are a survivor, we are here to support you.”

Registration ($30) is available online at walkamileasheville.org or at the event.
