AAAC Hosts New Exhibits in August
New exhibitions hosted by the Asheville Area Arts Council (AAAC) will be on display beginning Friday, August 12, and running through September 16, at the organization’s new location in The Refinery Creator Space, 207 Coxe Avenue. An opening reception for both exhibits will be from 5–8 p.m. on Friday, September 2.
The AAAC’s Point of View show titled “Off the Clock” is curated by local poet Elaine Bleakney. Elaine is the author of For Another Writing Back and a chapbook titled 20 Paintings by Laura Owens. The exhibit features works by eight artists, all full-time studio coordinators at Penland School of Crafts. The AAAC show title signifies the time these artists have to make their own work, as well as the unexpected interactions they have that connect them to the past, present, and future. They are Penland’s thinkers, tinkers, and self-described nerds.
Participating artists in this show are Daniel Beck (iron/ sculpture), Betsy DeWitt (photography), Susan Feagin (ceramics), Jay Fox (print), Nick Fruin (glass), Ian Henderson (metals), Ellie Richards, (wood/ sculpture), and Amanda Thatch (textiles).
AAAC’s second exhibition features the work of Douglas Lail. His “Hello My Name Is…” project is a collection of portraits and personal stories, highlighting the positive impact recovery makes not only on the individuals themselves, but also on their families and on the community at large. This project is a community outreach program that is helping to build awareness that people do achieve and sustain recovery from alcohol, drugs, mental health issues, and other life challenges.
