Red House Studios and Gallery Sets Stage for Autumn

Those seeking to escape the end days of summer will find autumn’s beauty gracing the walls of the Red House Studios and Gallery, home of the Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League, from September 2 through October 31.

Titled “Autumn Glory,” the exhibit includes members’ works in watercolor and oil paintings, etchings, photographs, mixed media, pastels, and three-dimensional mediums. Visitors are invited to browse the exhibit, purchase the art displayed, and tour open studios of individual artists. An opening reception will take place on Friday, September 2, from 5–7 p.m.

“Artists always seek new ways to look at and express a subject, even one as familiar as the seasons,” says curator, artist, and League member Darcy Orr. “The larger metaphor of autumn and change inspires us to look with new eyes at our surroundings and our lives.”

Artist Virginia A. Thompson, who works in watercolors and acrylics, says growing up in a subtropical area meant that she did not see the colors of autumn until she was an adult. “The sight will never seem old to me,” she says. “It is stunning beyond belief. I paint each leaf separately and with awe.”

Works in the exhibit will convey the dramatic changes that come with the transition from summer to winter, highlighting endings as well as beginnings, and inviting all, Darcy says, to “have their eyes opened to new ways of seeing our world and ourselves.”

Located at 310 West State Street, Red House Gallery is open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, 1–4 p.m. To view a calendar of other exhibits, events and educational opportunities, visit svfalarts.org.
