James “Buddy” Snipe: Found Art Assemblages

Meet the legendary Alabama artist James A. “Buddy” Snipe during a reception at American Folk Art and Framing in downtown Asheville. The exhibit will run from Thursday, October 6, through Wednesday, October 26, with a reception for Snipe on Friday, October 7.

The artist has attracted the attention of museum curators and the public alike with his colorful sculptures. His work incorporates the elements of high art, yet remains entirely personal, a blend of imagination and soulful intention makes each piece unique. His art is created from the ground up using found detritus like goat bones, vines, sticks, shards of glass and colorful scraps.

Betsey-Rose Weiss, owner of American Folk Art, was introduced to Snipe in the late 1980s and has been representing him at her Biltmore Avenue gallery since the early 2000s. “He represents an entire era of Southern self-taught artists which is vanishing,” says Weiss. “He is completely fueled by his own imagination, not outside trends or influences. He sees things no one else could and fashions sculptures and paintings completely original to him. Bringing Mr. Snipe to meet and visit with his admirers has long been a goal.”

Snipe will have a collection of his art available for purchase during the reception.

The reception is free and will run from 5–8 p.m. at American Folk Art and Framing located at 64 Biltmore Avenue in downtown Asheville. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Learn more at amerifolk.com.
