Caldwell Arts Council Welcomes Regional Artists For New Exhibit
The Caldwell Arts Council will open 2 SQUARED, an exhibit, with a reception on Friday, October 7, from 5–7 p.m. at their College Avenue gallery in Lenoir. Hosted by Foothills Performing Arts, the event will allow guests the opportunity to meet exhibiting artists.
The exhibit features the work of artists from around the region using various mediums to present a unique perspective on the human form. The artwork will remain in the gallery through Saturday, November 19.
Rob Amberg takes photographs and writes about the evolving culture and environment of Madison County, where he has been a resident since 1973. His work has been recognized by foundations like the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Center for Documentary Studies.
“My work for the 2 SQUARED exhibit draws from my three projects based in Madison County: Sodom Laurel Album, The New Road and Little Worlds, which is a work in progress,” says Amberg. “I’ve chosen images that reflect man’s relationship to the land itself and speak to issues of place, identity and home. My photographic concerns involve gesture and texture, collective memory and internal reality, and how we interact with the world around us.” For more, visit robamberg.com.
Asheville art handler and gallery curator Jon Sours will also display his paintings at the exhibit. His figure paintings portray the human form referenced from photographs, film stills and magazine clippings. Learn more about Sours and his art at jonsours.com.
Photographer Mercedes Jelinek is currently a resident artist at Penland School of Crafts. Jelinek’s Neighborhood Photo Booth project documents her neighbors in various settings during four years spent living in Baton Rouge, Brooklyn and currently at Penland.
Through the series, Jelinek has built a sense of community in each neighborhood. She gives a filmstrip from the project to all of her neighbors. Learn more about the project at mercedesjelinek.com.
Artist Tamie Beldue of Black Mountain will also present her mixed media drawings. Beldue has shown her art at locations across the country, including her current exhibit at Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville. View Beldue’s work at tamiebeldue.com.
