While traveling in Germany in the 1980s, Richard Schaffer, president and CEO of DeWoolfson Down, slept under a down comforter that was different than anything he had ever experienced before.
“It was nothing like bedding in America,” Schaffer says. “In Europe, your down duvet is like a toothbrush. It is personal, customized and only yours.”
Schaffer continued to build on the idea and began creating his own down bedding products. Thirty years later his company continues to produce America’s finest quality white goose down comforters, pillows and featherbeds.
“The combination of our high-quality German fabrics and European down really represents who we are,” Schaffer says.
A lawyer by training, Schaffer came to the area in the ’70s and taught law and international business at Appalachian State University. Schaffer and his wife, Avery, an EMT and emergency nurse, volunteer together with Linville Central Rescue Squad and have spent 15 years working with instruction wilderness K9 rescue dogs.
