Clouds and Waves in Art

Clouds and Waves in Art at Blue Spiral 1

Artist, Duy Huynh

Blue Spiral 1 Hosts Two New Exhibits

Forming from what seems to be nothingness, clouds and waves are driven by the wind. The rhythmic rise and fall, swells, and currents of both clouds and waves echo the cyclical nature of all things. On this theme, Blue Spiral 1’s latest group exhibition on the lower level of the gallery, Clouds and Waves, features a variety of media, including a special presentation of John Dickson’s time-lapse photography of clouds over the Blue Ridge Mountains.

With this exhibit, several artists will make their Blue Spiral debut. Christine Carr pairs iconic, architectural forms with cloud formations in dramatic black-and-white photographs. Local wood artist Darrell Copeland carves and paints objects reminiscent of the pattern on water’s surface. Exhibiting perpetual motion, the motorized wood components in John Douglas Power’s kinetic sculptures undulate and interact with projected video. Matthew Cusick constructs collaged depictions of waves using Bible engravings and bits of maps taken from a world atlas.
